In the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, Florence was the capital of the arts and, in the 15th century (Quattrocento), the metropolis of the arts. Here, the desires of wealthy merchants and bankers met the skills of artists such as Brunelleschi, Masaccio or Donatello.
Even in today’s Florence, the past is present through art – from the Cathedral, whose dome towers over the city, to the squares, churches and palaces, to the sculptures in the public space. Museums such as the Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, Bargello and many other collections are world-class and attract millions of visitors every year.
With over 450 illustrations, this volume offers a richly illustrated art history of the city of Florence.
