MENZEL, KRISTINA//KONEMANN//PINTURA
The Baroque period spanned Europe from 1600 to 1780. Beginning with Italian artists who brought drama to painting through dynamic compositions and sharp contrasts between light and dark, Baroque was later exported by countless artists to their own countries, where the new style developed in very different ways. With its monumental history paintings and magnificent portraits, catering to sovereign desires for splendor and displays of secular and religious power, Baroque became the style of European court art. The last phase of Baroque, known as Rococo, began around 1720 and was characterized by a greater sense of playfulness and intimacy. With over 450 works, Baroque presents an overview of the most important paintings of the Baroque period.
